Although a desert is often used as a metaphor for a difficult place, The New Testament often describes the wilderness using positive terms. When we look at the story of Jesus heading off to the wilderness after his baptism, we are reminded that sometimes God calls us to deserts on purpose, both to bring life to an uncultivated and abandoned place and to develop our character.
